Lebanon’s largest zoo and home to over 45 different endangered species; Animal city was inaugurated in spring 2005. The 25,000-square-meter site is located just 3 kilometers off the main highway in the heart of the Nahr al-Kalb valley and hosts a variety of animals rescued from the wild, from baboons and ostriches, to crocodiles, jaguars and tortoises. Animal City is considered as a shelter and a reserve where deserted animals are sheltered and protected. Many tenants of Animal City suffered terrible hardships before finding refuge at the shelter, with many abandoned by their owners or wounded by hunters. The brutality enforced on many of the animals before they arrived to the zoo inspired the people at Animal City to educate the visitors about the need to protect animals, targeting children in particular.
